Description
Horst Castle, Holsbeek, Belgium
This moated castle lies nestled in the green Wingebeek valley, between the Hageland hills.
The Lords of Horst lived here as long ago as the 13th century, and the characteristic square keep dates back to the 15th century.
In the 17th century the castle’s noble resident, Maria-Anna van den Tympel, ordered the building of two wings around the inner courtyard and carried out some important decorative work.
She also arranged the building of the coach house, which now accommodates the visitor's centre with its heritage shop and a cosy local café.
The castle, with its large pond/moat, is home to ‘De Rode Ridder’ (The Red Knight), the cartoon character created by Willy Vandersteen.
The castle sits in magnificent grounds, owned by the Agency for Nature and Forests (ANB).
Dogs are permitted on the castle grounds, but not inside the castle.
There is limited access to the castle for wheelchairs and buggies
